How to report bugs on a website
A short guide for people who check a website and pass their feedback on to the team building it.
What is it for?
The website you are checking has a “Report a bug” button – usually in the bottom right corner, sometimes on the left or as a tab at the edge of the page. With it, you leave feedback exactly where you noticed the problem: on a screenshot with a mark or in a short recording. No manual screenshots, no emails and no account needed.
How do I report something?
- 1
Click “Report a bug”
You will usually find the button in the bottom right corner of the page (or wherever the team has placed it). On a computer, choose “Screenshot” or “Record screen”; recording is described below.
- 2
Bug or idea?
If you see a choice between “Bug” and “Idea” at the top of the form, pick whether something is broken or you are suggesting a change, such as a new feature or a different layout. If there is no such choice, just describe your feedback.
- 3
Mark the problem on the screenshot
The “Box” tool is on from the start – drag over the screenshot to draw a box around the spot (a hint on the screenshot shows you how). You can also click with the “Circle” to circle a spot (drag for a bigger circle), use the “Arrow”, mark a passage with the “Highlighter” (a see-through color that keeps the content visible) or add “Text”. Circles are numbered, and a field for each of them appears below the description. Describe each spot or write one sentence in the “In general” field – the team gets it as a list: “1. …, 2. …”. To remove a mark, click it and then the “×” next to it (or press Delete). You can also remove a circle with the “×” next to its description field. The colored dots next to the tools change the color, e.g. yellow on a dark background or pink, and the lines next to them set the line weight of boxes, arrows and circles (thin, medium, thick). To move a mark you have drawn, drag it with the mouse. If, say, “Text” is on and you only want to adjust positions, choose “Move” – then a click will not draw anything new. “Blur” hides data you do not want to show, and “Undo” (or Ctrl+Z, ⌘Z on a Mac) reverses the last change.
- 4
On a phone: tap the spot, then “Next”
On a phone, the screenshot opens full screen. Tap the spot your feedback is about – a numbered circle appears. You can add more circles, a box, an arrow or text, and blur data (remove a mark you have tapped with the “×” button). Then tap “Next” in the top right corner (or “Skip” if you do not want to mark anything). In the form, “Edit marks” takes you back to the screenshot.
- 5
Describe what is wrong
One or two sentences are enough. If you marked spots with circles, describe each one in its numbered field or write one sentence in the “In general” field. Instead of typing, you can click “Dictate” and say it out loud – the text appears in the description field. Each numbered field has its own microphone that dictates into that field only.
- 6
Point at an element if you like
The “Point at element” button pins the report to a specific place on the page, such as a button or an image. Hover over the element and click it, and the team will know right away which one you mean. Esc cancels the selection.
- 7
Enter your name and email, then click “Send report”
You only enter your name and email with your first report – after that, your browser remembers them. We add the page address, your browser and the window size automatically.
- 8
Got another one? “Report another bug”
After sending, you will see a thank-you message with a “Report another bug” button. It opens a new report right away, with your name and email already filled in.
Screen recording
A recording helps when a bug only shows up after a few steps, e.g. during checkout or in a form. You show what you click and what happens, and you can talk it through as well.
- 1
Click “Report a bug”, then “Record screen”
Leave “Also record my voice (microphone)” ticked if you want to talk while recording, and click “Start recording”.
- 2
Choose this tab and click “Share”
Your browser asks what to share and for access to the microphone. Only the tab with the website is recorded.
- 3
Show the problem
Click around as usual and say what you see. A timer is shown at the bottom of the page; a recording can be up to 5 minutes long.
- 4
Click “Finish”
You will see a preview of the recording, add a short description and send the report just like with a screenshot. “Cancel” discards the recording.
Recording works on a computer in Chrome and Edge. On a phone or tablet, use a screenshot.
Page review: several notes in a row
When you go through a whole website and have lots of small notes, you do not have to open a new report each time. In “Page review” you click one element after another, add a sentence to each, and send them all with one button at the end. Each note reaches the team as a separate report with a screenshot and the marked element.
- 1
Click “Report a bug”, then “Page review”
A review panel appears at the side of the page. Elements under the cursor are highlighted on the page.
- 2
Click an element and describe the issue
Kreskio takes a screenshot with a box around the element right away. Type what is wrong and click “Add note” (or Ctrl+Enter). A number stays on the page and the note goes to the list in the panel.
- 3
Pick more elements
You can edit notes in the list or remove them with the cross. When you want to click something on the page, e.g. open a menu or go to another page, use “Pause picking” and then “Pick the next element”. The arrows in the panel header move it to the other side of the screen.
- 4
Enter your name and email, then send
The notes are sent one by one. If one of them cannot be sent, the rest wait in the panel and you can send them with the “Send the rest” button.
You can send up to 10 notes at a time. Page review works on a computer; on a phone, report with a screenshot. A single bug you want to draw on is still easiest to report with “Screenshot”.
What happens after I send it?
- 1
You get a confirmation email
The “We received your report” email has a “Follow the report” button.
- 2
You check the status and replies
Click it to see what stage your report is at – New, In progress, In review or Resolved – along with the team’s replies. You can reply there too, e.g. when the bug still happens.
- 3
You check the fix
When the team fixes the bug, you get a “Check the fix” email. Have a look at the website and click “It works” or “It still does not work” in the report – in that case, briefly describe what is wrong and the report goes back to the team.
- 4
We let you know by email
We send you a message when the team replies to your report or marks it as resolved. Several reports from around the same time are covered in one email.
An idea takes a simpler path: the team discusses it first and then marks it as “Under consideration”, “Accepted” or “Rejected”. You see the status and the team’s replies on the same page as your bug reports. Once an idea is accepted, the team works on it.
The link in the email is valid for 7 days. After that, open the page with your reports, enter the same email address and we will send you a new link.
Revision rounds
If you have agreed on a set number of revision rounds with the agency, after clicking “Report a bug” you will see something like “Round 1 of 3” at the bottom of the window, along with the number of notes collected. Without rounds, this part is not shown and every report goes to the team right away.
- 1
Collect notes for the round
Report them as usual – with a screenshot, a page review or a recording. Each note waits in the round until you send it, so you can go through the whole website at your own pace.
- 2
Send the whole round
Click “Report a bug”, then “Send round 1 to the agency” and confirm. The team gets all the notes at once, and you get a confirmation email listing your notes in this round.
- 3
Check the fixes
When the team is done, you get an email saying the round is ready. Check the website and, if everything works, click “Accept the round” on the page with your reports. If one of the notes is still not fixed, say so under that note or add it to the next round. You can start collecting notes for the next round early, but you can only send them once the previous round has been fixed.
- You see your rounds on the page with your reports, via the link in the email: which ones are fixed, which one is with the team, which one you are collecting and how many are left.
- Each sent round has a “Round record (PDF)” with the list of notes, the dates and the acceptance details – you can keep it or pass it on.
- If you collect notes for a round and do not send it within 3 days, we will remind you by email.
- Notes sent after the last agreed round still reach the team, marked “out of rounds”.
How do I write a good report?
- One report, one problem. Send separate notes separately.
- Write what you did, what you expected and what happened instead.
- If the problem only happens sometimes or only on a phone, say so in the description.
- If it is hard to describe, record your screen and say what you see.
- Notes on the content (typos, translations) are welcome too.
- For an idea, write what you want to change and why – who it helps and how.
Example: “When I click ‘Add to cart’, nothing happens. I expected the product to be added to the cart.”
Privacy
- You do not create an account. You only give your name and email address so the team can contact you about the report.
- Password and card fields are covered automatically on the screenshot. You can blur any other data yourself.
- A recording covers the whole browser tab, and you decide when it starts and ends. Do not show passwords or private data in it.
- Dictation uses your browser’s speech recognition (in Chrome, a Google service does this). If you prefer, just type the description.
- Only the team working on this website can see your report.
Frequently asked questions
- I cannot see the “Report a bug” button.
- Refresh the page. If you use an ad blocker, turn it off for this website. If the button still does not appear, let the person who sent you this guide know.
- Can I report things from my phone?
- Yes, with a screenshot. On a phone, the screenshot opens full screen: you tap the spot with the problem and then describe it in the form. The button works in browsers on computers, tablets and phones. Screen recording is only available on a computer.
- My browser does not ask me to share my screen.
- Recording works in Chrome and Edge on a computer. In another browser or on a phone, choose “Screenshot”.
- I have an idea, not a bug. Where do I send it?
- With the same button. If the form offers a choice between “Bug” and “Idea”, choose “Idea”. If not, describe your idea like any other note – the team will read it too.
- I lost the email with the link to my report.
- Ask the team for the link to the reports page, enter your email address there and we will send you a new link to all your reports.
- The button covers part of the page.
- Scroll the page or make the browser window smaller. You can also mention it in a report.
- What is the “Team sign-in” link?
- It is the way in for the team building the website. You can ignore it: you send reports as usual, without signing in.
